Ortodontics

A speciality of dentistry ;Orthodontics focus on study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may cause to tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships or both of them. Orthodontics comes from two Greek words ortho meaning straight and odons meaning tooth.
ordontiOrthodontic dental treatment may performed for only dental displacement , or may control and modificate the facial growth which is better to define as "dentofacial orthopedics".

Orthodontists can carry out the treatment only for aesthetic reasons in order to improve the general appearance of patients' teeth. However, there are Orthodontists, who reconstructs the entire face, instead of focusing exclusively on teeth. Still, treatment is generally prescribed for practical reasons like providing the patient with a functionally improved bite.
If the main goal of the treatment is the dental displacement, most commonly a fixed multibracket therapy is used. In this case orthodontic wires areinserted into dental braces, which can be made from stainless steel or amore aesthetic ceramic material.

After an orthodontic treatment, patients often use retainers, which will keep the teeth in their corrected position while the bone reforms around them.

ordontiThe retainers are worn full-time for a short period, perhaps 6 months in a year, and then worn periodically ( duringsleep) as long as the orthodontist recommends. It is possible for the teeth to stay aligned if retainer is not worn on regular base. There are a lot of reasons teeth will crowd while a person ages; so teeth can not be guaranteed, orthodontically treated or otherwise, will stay aligned without retainers. Therefore, most orthodontists recommend their patient to wear retainer for a long time after orthodontic treatment.

Specialist dentists can align the teeth with care of the surrounding soft tissues, with or without movement of the underlying bones.
